So why not learn a skill that will bring years of enjoyment to your life? This course is great for individuals, couples, or families with teenagers and builds on the skills learned in the Introductory and Competent Crew courses.
The Introductory course is essential to build a solid and correct foundation from which to build your knowledge. Topics covered in this course include: nautical terms, sailing theory and boat handling, basic navigation, how to read a chart, ropework and knots, safety on board and rules of the road.
The Competent crew course builds on the basics learned in the Introductory course and introduces some advanced topics. You will learn how to use the safety equipment on board your yacht, how to communicate properly using a VHF radio, fire-fighting, metereology - where to obtain forecasts and how to interpret them, reefing sails, boat handling, preparing a vessel for strong wind, how to pick up a person overboard under sail and power, navigation, additional rules of the road, picking up a mooring, rowing a dinghy, berthing alongside and the correct way to drop an anchor so you can sleep peacefully at night!
In the Charter Skipper syllabus you will be prepared for the pleasure of taking command of your own charter yacht. You will be required to make decisions and convey them to your crew. Preparation for your voyage will include basic passage planning including:- setting the agenda for the day with the conditions you are likely to encounter, selecting a good anchorage for lunch and for the night, basic vessel checks and a working knowledge of the mechanical and electrical systems on board, working with and understanding charts, pilot books and tide charts and how to obtain and understand weather forecasts.
Further navigation is covered and the course also includes an inshore night sail. You will spend time on advanced yacht handling under sail and power, learn how to sail on and off a mooring and how to come along side and leave a wharf using your motor. Preparation for strong wind, anchoring and man overboard will also be revisited and you will discover advanced sail setting techniques to get more speed and performance from your yacht.
Rules of the road are reinforced constantly to give you confidence to quickly assess any close quarters situation. This course is focused on giving you the confidence to take friends and family on that dreamed about sailing holiday.
The course is for a maximum of 4 students and is conducted on board a luxury yacht in the beautiful waters of Pittwater, Broken Bay and the Lower Hawkesbury River. Upon successful completion you will be ready for bareboat (self skippered) charter so for those who have dreamed about skippering their own yacht into the sunset - this is the course for you!!
The cost is $1150 for 5 days/4 nights or $ 645 for 3 days/2 nights. These prices include theory notes and all provisioning.
We also offer a 25% discount for those under 18 whilst accompanied by a parent and actively encourage families to learn together. |
